History of the NLRMTA
In the Beginning
The NRMTA, now NLRMTA, was incorporated in 1987 as an independent association affiliated with the CFMTA. Prior to this, we existed as a chapter of the Nova Scotia RMTA.
The prime mover and founder of our organization, and also its first President, was Cavell Sheppard, recently deceased. Acting on the instigation of Matt Hughes, the Nova Scotian Vice-President, through Dr. D.F. Cook of the MUN School of Music, Cavell set about contacting music teachers. In the beginning there were ten.
The Association is governed by the 1987 Act of Incorporation, our By-Laws, and our Code of Ethics. A Board of Directors is elected from the membership: it consists of the President, the Past President, the President-Elect, the Secretary, the Treasurer, and four Members-at-Large. The term of office extends over two years.
In the years since Cavell gathered together those first teachers the Association has expanded in numbers and become involved in many activities.
